Summary
In 1963, Antoine is 14.  He lives at Rezé, near Nantes, one of four children in a low-income family.  His father, a hotel maître d’, is often away from home.  Whilst revising for his exams, Antoine is distracted by his first experience of love, which begins with an innocent exchange of glances with an attractive girl of his own age.  When Antoine is injured in a car accident for which she feels responsible, the girl, Olivia, visits him in hospital and offers to coach him on his exams, to make up for time lost in the classroom.   With Olivia’s help, Antoine develops a keener appreciation of the great works of literature, and in so doing becomes aware of his vocation to become a writer...
