Summary
Norman Pitkin is an enthusiastic but pretty inept butcher’s assistant.  During a hold up, his boss,  Mr Grimsdale, swallows his watch and has to be taken into hospital.  Norman unintentionally wreaks havoc in the wards when he visits his employer and the two men end up being banned from the hospital.  But Norman is determined to return so that he can see again the little orphan girl he met during his first visit...

Wetter than the Atlantic Ocean during a particularly damp sea storm, A Stitch in Time certainly isn’t the most sophisticated of British film comedies, but its naive charm gives it a certain appeal that will be appreciated by youngsters and die-hard fans of Norman Wisdom.  Today, Wisdom’s idea of comedy (which consists almost entirely of gumpish slapstick) has a limited appeal, although his films were popular enough in their day.  This one suffers from a slight surfeit of industrial strength saccharine, although the visual gags are impressively staged and some of them are even quite funny.  Children below the age of ten will love this film because Norman is such a warm, child-like personality who just cannot help tripping over his own two feet; most adults will loathe it for the same reason.
