Maurice Garrel was a French film actor. He was born in Saint-Gervais, France on 24 February 1923 and died in Paris, France on 4 June 2011. Having been a stage actor for more than a decade, he made his film debut in the late 1950s and would work with some of the great auteur filmmakers of the 60s and 70s, including François Truffaut, Jacques Rivette, Alain Cavalier, Costa-Gavras, and Claude Sautet. Garrel was nominated for a César in 1991 for his supporting role in Christian Vincent's La Discrète. He regularly appeared in films directed by his son, the filmmaker Philippe Garrel. He is the grandfather of the actor Louis Garrel.
